Crack Is Wack Is Coming Back
Keith Haring’s Crack is Wack mural located at 128th Street and 2nd Avenue, NYC is coming back to life. Artist, Louise Hunnicutt was recommended by the New Museum to the Keith Haring foundation for the restoration project. The 16-foot-tall, 26-foot-wide mural was painted on June 27, 1986, as a warning to crack cocaine users. Haring chose to give the mural the title, having witnessed his studio assistant undergo years of struggles with crack, which led to a near-death experience.
The mural will not be available for viewing during reconstruction of the Harlem River Drive, expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
